If our 7/10 Steelrising PS5 review didn’t convince you to buy Spiders’ French Souls-like just yet, PS Plus Premium members can enjoy some hands-on time as part of their subscription. Sony has quietly added a two-hour trial to the top tier of its subscription service, allowing you to get a feel for this industrial alternative to Europe’s most-famous uprising.
Like all other PS Plus trials, the two-hour countdown will only get underway while you’re in-game, so don’t worry too much about how long it’ll take to download. Remember, you can find a full list of All PS Plus Games, including game trials, through the link.
In other unrelated Steelrising news, an update due on 29th September will add New Game+ to the release, where you’ll find four additional weapons and an extra outfit. The patch will also rebalance some combat mechanics and fix a variety of bugs. Excitingly, if you’re already intimately familiar with the campaign, then New Game+ will mix up the enemies and their move sets, keeping you firmly on your tippy-toes.

2 hours? Does that include downloading time?
"I got soul but im not a soldier"
There seem to be a few trials that aren’t on the trial page through PS Plus. MLB The Show 22 has one as well.

@nessisonett Thanks for the heads up, wasn't aware of that one either.
Always get confused with Atomic Heart and Steelrising as to which ones which. I know ones very similar to a Souls game and the other I think is FPS
One of my favorite games this year. If it wasn't for Elden Ring, it might even be my favorite. Yes, I seriously love it that much.
@get2sammyb Sammy I'm so sorry. I promise you I do normally read your articles 😔
Great news. This game was awesome.
After having thoroughly played this one, I have to come on here and many other outlets and refute much of the criticism given.
This game is not nearly as buggy as stated first and foremost.
The level design and visuals are on par with any From Soft title delivered in the last 6 years, which is an ironic criticism when these outlets give a FromSoft title glowing reviews yet it's using a near decade old buggy engine still, to this date. There are certain aspects of the visuals and even art design that surpass most souks likes thus far.
The level design is far less linear than they are saying. There is a myriad of secret pathways to unlock as well as pathways that open up metroidvania style with tools acquired. The major problem with other souls likes, where there is literally no story and direction are done so well here, as an actual story exists and subtle markers via a compass item can help give you a GENERAL direction of where to go. The art style, and level design are awesome, as is the story
The combat and build variety around that arsenal of weapons is awesome. This game is perfect in the sense that even if you set aside being able to adjust difficulty in the settings if you so choose; the game itself can be played in a way that makes it more difficult or easier depending on the items you choose to employ.
I question the integrity of the review outlets greatly so when it comes to this, and if you look historically at the genre, there is an obvious bias to From Soft alone, despite them literally doing the same thing for years, and refusing to listen to their player base. More concerning though, as is the case with Steel Rising, is that the same criticisms that exist in From Soft titles, are not held to account as they are in other titles in the genre.
As a lover of the genre and having played pretty much every souls like made, this one is up there with the best. I truly hope anyone that is weary based on reviews gives this a try, as it is easily an 8 or higher. Look at user reviews anywhere and you will see that actual player sentiment for this game is far higher than some of the reviews from other outlets.
Definitely gonna give this a go! The trials are one of my favourite things about the premium sub. I’ve already bought Tiny Tina’s wonderlands on the back of the trial.
@KundaliniRising333 Thanks for taking the time to put your thoughts out into the wild…
I recently got hold of a cheap copy of Thymesia, another recent Souls-clone… and found it to be a really enjoyable experience. It has a much shorter run time than a lot of its peers, taking me around 20-25hrs for the platinum. Level design and enemy variety are somewhat lacking, but the combat is seriously tight with some awesome boss battles. The whole experience was very akin to Sekiro, and it was well worth the admission price.
I nearly went with Steelrising (over Thymesia) but instead went for the cheaper option. Steelrising seems to have a fairly steep price tag,
Would you say it’s worth it? I understand that a bag relating to one of the trophies (making the platinum impossible) has now been patched?
What would you say are the major ups and downs??
@KundaliniRising333 VERY well said, cover all the points and unfair criticisms imo.
@KundaliniRising333 your comment has made me interested in this game again since this sites review put me off getting it day one and so I got soulstice instead.
Just a quick question, for someone who usually sucks at souls games because of their difficulty, is this game easily doable with the difficulty sliders? Or is it still quite hard.
I’m all over this game at some point but in all honesty it’s likely going to be after Gotham Knights, RE 8’s DLC, GOW: Ragnarok, The Callisto Protocol, Dead Space remake and COD: MW2. And even after all those games it will depend if it’s on sale and / or cheaper than Evil West which I also have my eye on. I’m absolutely VERY interested in this game but there’s just too much else coming out soon that I’d prefer to spend my time and money on. And up until then, I’m also not going to have much time for gaming.
@ultimateotaku91 depends what you choose, you can start from as easy as no damage
I am 19hrs in. And still has me hooked. Side quest flesh out how the city got the way it is - so worth doing also. I am on PC, so not taking into account whatever issues are on the PS version.
Steam reviews rating went from "Mixed" to "Very Positive" once 10+ hr reviews started showing up.
I filter out any review under 10hrs play time on Steam for games like these as a rule.
@dschons same. It’s easily up there with ER for my GOTY. I love the setting and weapons above all else.
Ooh lovely, been on the fence about this
@UltimateOtaku91 it's absolutely more. Manageable without the sliders or with. The reason being is that you can literally make the game easier just by using modules to augment your play style. Beyond that the grenades are powerful enough in this game they're not like most Souls games where throwable items are just kind of useless in this game they literally are borderline overpowered so if you want you can use grenades and save up you know your currency that's in the game to buy grenades and it makes boss fights a breeze if that's what you want to do or if you want to make it harder for yourself you just don't use the grenades.
In my opinion that alone makes the game easier and as well as the progression system you really can make this game a lot easier than most Souls games I feel like the difficulty curve is lessened too merely with the variety of weapons and builds you can do with them.
I personally didn't Tinker at all with the difficulty sliders but I imagine if you mess with those this game is very accessible to just about everyone because the game already is not the hardest Souls like by any means
@CJD87 it's funny we are kind of complete opposites I actually ended up going with steel Rising instead of thymesia and I will probably play thymesia too but yeah this game is definitely worth it imo. having played almost all of them aside from thymesia, this is one of my favorite non from soft Souls likes if not the favorite.
I feel some people gave this game a bad review as far as user reviews go just because it's a different setting than most Souls likes. this isn't Gothic or medieval but instead during an alternate version of the French Revolution and I personally thought the story was great. the side missions were fun and kind of just pin together the story better.
the only Downs I would say is that it is shorter but not too short and I do think some of the enemy variety could be better; in some cases there's just different like Elemental versions of some enemies that they reused a bit but as you progress there are new enemies and they're harder so that's cool.
The only other downside I personally experienced a couple times while playing is if you jump around too much trying to explore and see like where you can go when it kind of looks like it could go to some path it can ends just being kind of an invisible wall where you can get stuck on environmental objects and have to restart the game because you're just stuck floating there but the game's pretty explanatory as you play, and you get a feel of where you can and cannot go pretty often like I said it's linear but it's metroidvania linear so there's a bunch of side branching paths there's a bunch of blocked areas that you get to during missions or once you get a tool and there's tons of Collectibles and items to find if you are one of those people like me that likes to scour you know every nook and cranny of of every area.
A more robotic like windup way of combat is kind of baked into the game and I think it's intentional where you kind of have to learn certain weapons and moves have a wind up from you as the player and you have to time it accordingly and the same goes for enemies. they're all robotic so they all have mechanical looking windups and some people and reviews have whined about that making it seem like it's clunky but I think it's intentional and it's no way clunky to the point of feeling like it hinders you, it's just timing.
I was so appalled by the mainstream website reviews regarding this game that I went on to pretty much anywhere I could while playing this and then after I finished it which was just a few days ago and posted my thoughts on it and I usually don't do that but I thought this game was so much better than how it was being portrayed and it's criticisms were so fickle and overlooked in any from soft game that I felt like I just had to say something and I know it's just my personal experience but like I said if you pay attention to people that actually put hours into the game and not you know reviewed it for a website you'll see that there's pretty overwhelming positive experiences with this game.
I genuinely hope that maybe the demo will give spiders a little more of an audience with this one and I genuinely hope they don't just give up on trying this genre of game
@UltimateOtaku91 Souls veteran here. Without the "easy setting", I died twice in my entire playthrough including all side missions. That includes one afk death, lol. It's WAY more accessible difficulty-wise than any Souls game. I'd describe it as: if you simply button mash, you will die repeatedly, too. But if you pay just a little attention to the controls and mechanics, you're good. Unexperienced players may still struggle a bit here and there but you won't see undoable challenges.
This is one game were a trial would be useful cuz I don't like Souls games but like French Revolution and Automatons... But not getting Premium just for this
@KundaliniRising333 Thanks man, and I would definitely stick Thymesia on your wishlist... I'd assume in coming months it will be subject to sale, and would be an amazing purchase with 20-30% discount. If you're into Platinums, its a pretty decent trophy roadmap with only a bit of grind - most trophies unlocked via MSQ and beating bosses etc. Based on your Steelrising comments, I'd expect you'd like it.
You mention Steelrising is quite short, but IMO this is actually a pro! I think so many games today are open-world 100+ hr epics.... there are only so many hrs in the day to play! I recently got the platinum on Nioh (1) and that took 80-90 hours, so something a third of that length would be ideal.
I'm travelling this month, and also digging into the new Monkey Island, but hoping Steelrising might land a sale before Xmas - you've convinced me to buy
Thoughts on Wo Long demo?
@riceNpea No
Hugely disappointed.. I was pessimistic but it surpasses my worst expectations.
@mctaboo what game is this demo for?
Why is this demo hidden behind the highest pay wall?
@riceNpea Steelrising
